Praise and Worship

'Sing for joy to God our strength' - Psalm 81:1a

Our church can provide many opportunities for people of all ages to contribute to our worship and praise throughout the week and in particular our Sunday services.  We have been blessed with a number of talented folk who give up their time to support and lead our congregation in song to celebrate God our Father.

It may be you feel God 'nudging' you to use your musical or artistic talents.  We would like to hear from you!  Be brave and reach out to contact one of the various teams below or speak to the clergy and see how you can support us.

Choristers at St Mary's

If you really enjoy singing or playing traditional hymns then the team would invite you to come along and be part of the Choristers - you will even get to wear one of the specially made robes.  They occasionally meet to practice new hymns but always sing on each Sunday at St Mary's church to a packed congregation and fantastic acoustic environment.

Children and Families Ministry

St John's Kids

St John’s Kids is for little babies through to youth – there is a class for every one!

On most Sundays except when there is an All Age or a family service the children have their own classes away from the main service.

They start in the main service with a children’s song, leave to do their fun packed activities and then come back and join the main service when we take communion.

All Age Service

On the first Sunday every month we hold at St John's Church at 11.00am an All Age Service suitable for young and old.

  • Fun!
  • Interactive
  • Finishing by 12 noon

.

0-3s Club

St John’s 0-3s Club is for parents with babies or toddlers and meets at St. John’s Church on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 10.15 am for 10.30 am start, till 11.30 am.

There are lots of activities to keep the children occupied.  It has very lively music videos, simple crafts, short bible talk and finally some refreshments for young and old.  It is all free!

Connect Youth Club

Meets every Friday at St John’s Church from 7.00-9.00pm.

Connect Youth Club is free entry! And is open to all those aged 11-18. A tuck shop is available as are games like table tennis, inside soft football and a variety of table games.   There is also a ‘chill-out corner’ where there are some bean bags.

We are also very keen to find new helpers - if you are interested in volunteering once a month then follow this link

Parenting

We have recently run a parenting course for young families and are planning to run a similar course for those parents with teenage children.

The courses are absolutely free, informal and hopefully fun!  Watch our events page to see when the next one will be available.

Childcare Services

Our church runs a very successful and highly thought of childcare service during the week from 7.30am - 6.00pm. The Childcare is held at St John's Church which has a number of purpose built classrooms and over 50 staff looking after the children placed in our care.

The setting is run with a strong Christian ethos and dedicates a number of Sunday services during the year so children and families can come together to worship and celebrate.

Family Events

We run a number of events designed to encourage families to come together and enjoy games and a meal, outside BBQs fun days, baking and crafts during Lent and outside activities such as Easter egg hunts, nativity treasure hunts and nature walks.

At Christmas we run a series of Christingle services.  Keep an eye on our events page or subscribe to our news information service to find out what's going on.

Youth Leadership Training

We pride ourselves of our active Youth Leadership Development Programme within the parish and this year we had two new graduates.  The two girls attended a special Commissioning Service for the Youth Leaders at St Peter's Church, Hutton with Archdeacon Mike Lodge, Rev Andy Smith and Mark Tiddy diocesan youth advisor.

Community & Outreach

The Table

What is it? - A community project comprised of faith and non faith volunteers supported and currently funded by local Basildon Churches.

What's its purpose? - To promote the spiritual health and wellbeing of the community.

Where are we at? - The Table opens on Thursday and Friday each week - 9.30 am to 1.30 pm - in St Martin’s Square, Basildon Town.

Alpha & Mind the Gap

Every year we run Alpha courses in the evening and sometimes during the day at St John’s Church, Langdon Hills.

Alpha is a 10 week course which gives guests the opportunity to explore the Christian faith. It is a chance to ask questions you may have always wanted to ask or to just look at life a little bit deeper.

Coffee Mornings & Tea

We run a number of coffee mornings/afternoons during the week and Saturday mornings (Lent) and we can provided spiritual support to those who need it.

This is through prayer support or using one of our Listeners who have been specifically trained to support those who request it.

Don't hesitate!   We are always there when you need it.

Vintage Messy Church & Rendezvous

Come and experience a fun pack session where you have plenty of tea & coffee plus biscuits, enjoy a craft or game with friends, engage with a short and interesting church service all followed up with a tasty ploughman's lunch and desert.

During the week every Thursday morning Rendezvous is open to those 50+ where you can expect a warm welcome and refreshments.

0-3s Club

Every Monday and Tuesday we run a 0-3s Club for parents/careers to bring their small children along to enjoy music, games, a short talk and a refreshing tea & coffee with biscuits.

It is all for a £1 donation and hopefully a great time to meet up with others.

Ladies Breakfast

Do come along to a fantastic morning starting with a bountiful and healthy breakfast!  We have in the past lined up some engaging speakers which have enthralled and encourage us through their mission and real-life challenges.

So if you want a little pampering by our wonderful men waiters, the chance to hear some great music and inspirational speakers make sure you keep an eye out for the next venue - watch this space.

Sensory Garden

Our church has been blessed with a Sensory garden plot, at the Langdon Hills Nature Reserve. This is an exciting opportunity to become involved, and continue our worship in the community. The plot has been divided, with a section available for each church ~ and we welcome you to join-in with this project, in a beautiful spot.

We are very fortunate to have this green space, wildlife & peacefulness on our doorstep. Please help us to continue to grow in fellowship, through this garden.

We would welcome practical help, donations of plants and fundraising ideas; so that we can all benefit from this special place. 🌿
Please do pop down and visit the garden, which is adjacent to the car park/picnic area, and just along the pathway towards the lake.
(Look out for the central Magnolia tree in our plot!)

Please keep this new venture in your prayers, and speak to Perry Childs (St.John’s) and/or Sally Butler (St.Mary’s) for more information.

Ministries

Pastoral Care

The primary role of the Pastoral Care Team is to be ‘the eyes and ears within the parish and local community so we can respond to the people’s needs as they arise’. Also, with the intention of not letting anyone ‘slip through the net’, we are constantly looking at different ways of ensuring that if someone doesn’t turn up for a gathering (worship or social) or meeting, etc., we will be able to follow them up.

Children and Families

We run a number of activities throughout the week aimed at young children and parents/carers such as St John's Childcare, 0-3s Club, Family Thanksgiving service (first Sunday) and St John's kids (Sunday).

Prayer

We believe God wants everyone in our church to grow closer to Him. That means learning to pray alone; together and for others. It means living our whole lives in a spirit of worship and prayer.   Each week day people meet for morning prayer, from 8:40-9:10, at St John's. We also run a prayer Network where we pray for others via Email and after the Sunday service prayer ministry at St John's Church.

Small Groups

These meet in people’s homes or in St John’s prayer room on various evenings during the week with the purpose of helping people to grow in their Christian Faith by worshipping, learning and working together.  We have a number of small groups in different locations and times

Listeners

Whatever the problem, talking with someone trained to listen sensitively and sympathetically, can help to understand it.   Listeners will not judge you in anyway or give you advice, but will be alongside you as you explore your situation and will work confidentially with you.  Come and meet our Listeners at out "Tea and Chat" event

Community & Outreach

We believe God wants us to serve our local community.  That means engaging with local people and issues beyond our church and providing facilities and services which respond to the needs of those in our parish. It means working together with other Christians in outreach and service beyond our parish and responding to the needs of Basildon.  We are committed to seeing positive, Jesus shaped change, come in our community.

Praise and Worship

God created us to be instruments with the ability to sing and make music. Music is an important part of our worship and praise to God, with many Bible verses making references to singing and music.  Within our Parish we provide a variety of opportunities to praise and worship God.

Life Events

We hold special services to remember important life events, including the birth, marriage and death of members of our church and local community.  We provide a number of life event services including Thanksgiving for a new baby, baptism (Christening), confirmation, marriage preparation, bereavement and funeral services

The Basildon Deanery

The Basildon Deanery is a group of Church of England Churches in the Basildon , Billericay and Wickford areas. Please visit the Basildon Deanery website for further information and details of events happening in our local churches.
